How to Repel Mosquitoes

Tell Them to Buzz Off

Mosquito-on-leaf

In a few short months, the temperature is going to rise, and mosquitoes will start to appear again. However, with these tricks to repel mosquitoes, you might not see them so soon, after all.

How to Repel Mosquitoes

Keep your grass tidy: Avoid leaving grass clippings on your lawn after mowing because they can provide a hiding spot for mosquitoes.

Keep water moving: If you love your birdfeeder, we have some bad news: mosquitoes love it too! They like to lay their eggs in standing water. Be sure to frequently change the water in your birdfeeder or invest in one with a moving element. Some sources of standing water include:

  • Clogged gutters
  • Bird baths
  • Landscape ponds without fish or fountains
  • Tires
  • Toys
  • Potted plants that don’t drain properly
  • Part of your yard with poor drainage
  • Under your deck
  • Sandboxes
  • Animal food bowls
  • Shovels
  • Furniture covers after heavy rain
  • Kiddie pools
  • By your AC unit

Empty water in plant dishes: Once again, the mosquitoes will flock to any standing water, including the water that collects under your potted plants. Due diligence is required to ensure excess water does not sit.

Use your green thumb: Mosquitoes stay away from plants with strong scents, like marigolds, lemon grass, mint, garlic, and rosemary.

Make Sprays: Speaking of strong smells…you can even use this tactic to make your own spray that repels mosquitoes. Simply mix oils of those potent plants with water, and spray it on your lawn in the early day to give it a chance to evaporate.
