How to Get Rid of Stink Bugs

Without Squishing Them

Common Winter Pests in Virginia

Stink bugs are aptly named for the unpleasant odor they produce. Luckily, this smelly insect is more of a nuisance than a threat to your home. While they’re not threatening you, they might feel threatened when you approach, which is when they release a stinky smell from glands in their abdomen. You can crush this bug when you see it, but sometimes your kindness in letting them live (not in your home, thankyouverymuch) can prevent that unwelcomed odor.

How to Get Rid of Stink Bugs without Killing Them

Trap Them: Did you ever trap spiders or other bugs using a cup? You can do it with stink bugs, too. Simply put the cup over the stink bug and slip paper under to keep it trapped. Bring the glass outside away from your home and release the bug.

Bags: Dog owners likely have plenty of doggy poop bags to spare. Using the same method as picking up your dog’s waste, place it over your hand and gently push the stink bug in. Quickly tie it before the bug feels too threatened, and either throw it away or dump the insect outside. You may still smell a little bit of the odor, but the bag does help trap it.

Soapy Water: Did you know stink bugs can’t swim? Fill a bucket of water with dish detergent and flick the bugs inside. They’ll simply sink to the bottom. There you can let them drown, or if you feel like being a hero, you can take the water outside and dump it out near the curb, where they’ll dry off and go about their business.
