How to Get Rid of Stink Bugs

Five Methods

Common Winter Pests in Virginia

Oftentimes, getting rid of stink bugs is as simple as removing one or two bugs from your home, and further action isn’t required. In the event of an infestation, however, you’ll need to take more aggressive measures. It’s important to be mindful of the method you choose because stink bugs are like the skunks of the bug world—they release an unpleasant odor when threatened. Today, we’re looking at the different things you can do to get rid of stink bugs.

5 Ways to Get Rid of Stink Bugs

1. Soapy water

This trick gives you the option to save the stink bug or get rid of it forever. Put dish detergent in a container of water and simply flick the bug inside. They’ll sink to the bottom, and you can let them drown or take the water outside and dump it out near the curb to allow the insect to live.

2. Doggy waste bags

Dog owners will know this trick! Grab one of the bags you use to pick up your pup’s poo, and use it like a glove. Gently glide the bag over the stink bug to prevent the bug from feeling threatened, and quickly close and tie it. Then dispose of the bag in an outdoor trash can.

3. Catch and release

This is one of the most humane ways to take care of a stink bug problem. Place a cup over the pest and slide a piece of paper underneath. Carefully head outside and let the bug free.

4. Insecticides

If you have an infestation, you can use an insecticide to take care of this pest. Head to your home improvement store and pick out the right one for you. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully so you use it safely.
