How to Keep Spiders out of Your Basement
Four Steps
With the weather cooling and more time spent inside, are you noticing you’re not alone? Spiders are a common house pest—in fact, they’re present in basically all buildings! While their presence shouldn’t surprise you, that doesn’t mean you want them as companions. Learn how to keep spiders out of your basement.
How to Keep Spiders out of Your Basement
Keep the space tidy. Spiders like to find places to hide from predators—like you! If your space is untidy, that gives them plenty of spots to stay away from you. Keep your space tidy and free from hiding spots to make a less inviting environment.
Remove cobwebs. Spiders go where they think it will be safe, so those old spider webs are a great sign they have found a suitable environment to call their own. Periodically check for cobwebs and remove them to discourage spiders.
Seal cracks. Spiders have to get in somewhere! Seal cracks that allow spiders to come in from the outside. This will even help prevent other pests from coming inside.
With that said, most house spiders have never been outside! That’s why your catch and release method of getting rid of them might not be as helpful as you’d think.
Use scent. Some things that smell great to you like eucalyptus and peppermint are repulsive to spiders. Use real plants or essential oils to keep them at bay.
Are You Seeing More Spiders Than Normal?
You might have a bigger pest problem on your hands. Spiders are the exterminators of the pest world, and they go where they can find food. If you’re suddenly finding more spiders than usual, it could be a sign you’re dealing with a different pest infestation.
