Can Ants Bite?

ants

More often than not, ants are simply pesky pests that simply have no place in our homes. Unlike stinging insects, they don’t leave the scary impression they can harm someone, unless, of course, you’re thinking about a fire ant. Some ants sting and some pinch. But do ants bite, too?

Do Ants Bite?

There are over 12,000 species of ants, so the answer varies from one to another. In Virginia, the four most common ants are little black ants, odorous house ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants. Carpenter ants are the only ones you need to worry about biting you.

Carpenter ants are one of the largest species of ants at about a 1/4″ to 1/2″ long. When you think of them, you probably imagine them chomping on wood (based on their name), and that’s true. They eat moist, decayed wood and will eventually start munching on the foundation of your home, sometimes spelling disaster. With their powerful chompers that can chew their wood, it’s no wonder the workers can bite when they feel threatened. Their bite can be painful due to their large size.

While traveling, you might also run into field ants and crazy ants that also bite.
