Are All Spiders Bad?

Spider in kitchen

Fear of spiders go so deep, there is even a classification for it: arachnophobia. People with this deep-seeded fear, those who are mildly afraid, and people who are indifferent to these eight-legged pests all want to know: are all spiders bad? The good news is no, most spiders are not bad! Spiders do have this naturally terrifying look that can be surprising, especially if you run into one unexpectedly, but the reality is that spiders are some of the least dangerous pests on the planet.

The House Spider

Whether or not you know it, you probably do have many spiders residing in your home. Everyone else does, too. House cannot or do not bite and they can live for a long time in secret locations. Even though it might seem like you have more spiders during the winter time, they’re really there all year long.

The good news is that having spiders in your house is rarely a problem. You should seek help, however, if someone has an allergy to spiders or if you suddenly see dozens (they follow food, and you might have a different pest invading).

Spiders aren’t quick to flock into your home, so take comfort in knowing that for every spider that you kill, there is one fewer spider.

Spiders to Watch

The following spiders are not deadly, but they can bite and cause a trip to the doctor. The good news is that they are rare and unaggressive, so even if you happen to find one, you will likely be okay.

Brown Recluse Spiders

The brown recluse spider can cause a very painful bite that may lead to necrosis. Necrosis is when surrounding tissue turns black and dies off. The damage caused by a brown recluse spider may also be permanent. Seek medical attention right away if you think you have been bitten by a brown recluse spider.

Black Widow Spiders

Black widow spiders do live in this area of the country but are still fairly rare. They are found hidden inside of dark and dry areas. Those who get bit by a black widow usually survive even without any hospitalization. But don’t be too concerned if you see one—black widow spiders are skittish and will only bite if immediately threatened
